Response Questions

1. How did you experience the book? It's not always helpful to talk about whether or not you liked the book, but rather how you felt as you were reading it? Were you pulled effortlessly into the book...or did you have difficulty getting into it? Why?
I felt like I could connect to them even though we have a ten year age gap. They have problems just like I do. Even though they get themselves into sticky situations, they work hard to get passed them. At first, it was really hard to get into the book, because the book was really long. After reading a few chapters, I got sucked it, because they experienced so many different cultures.

2. Were you happy about your book choice? Why or why not?

I was happy about it, because the book was really interesting to read. It wasn't just a book that contained information; it told about the girls' lives and problems.

3. Which place discussed in the book did you find the most intriguing? Why do you think that was the case?
I think the most intriguing place for me was Hanoi, Vietnam. Vietnam is where my parents are from and I'd never been there before, so it was interesting to read what the girls in the book thought of Vietnam. Every time there was a Vietnamese word in the book, I was really happy that I could read and pronounce it.

4. What central ideas might the author be exploring-the novel's themes? Consider ideas about the nature of love, the requirements of goodness, the meaning of justice, the burden of the past...basic human issues that are at stake in the book.
The themes in the book were love, traveling, adventure, exploration, and definitely adaptation. The girls had to adapt to a lot to be able to stay in some of those countries.

5. What do you feel you learned from this project? Please consider the book, the technology involved with producing the project, or any other aspect regarding the project.

I learned that a lot of countries aren't as blessed as the United States. The children in most of the countries that the girls had visited had to beg and sell things in the streets just to get something to eat. Most of the children in the United States can go to school and actually have a chance of getting a career. I learned about a lot of different cultures and how they treat people differently than in the United States.

6. What was the most enjoyable part of the project? Please explain why you felt this way.

Finding all the pictures was really fun, because there are so many pictures to choose from to depict just one idea.

7. What was the most difficult part of the project? Please explain why you felt this way.

Reading the book was the most difficult part of the project, because the book is like six hundred pages. Sometimes, there are parts in the book where the girls talk about themselves. I sometimes get impatient and just want to learn about the culture of the region and not about them.

Bangkok, Thailand

The girls and I have split up for now. Amanda went to go visit with her family somewhere in Thailand and Holly went to go get her scuba diving certificate. I was going to go meet them later in Thailand. For now, this journal entry will be about my adventure through Bangkok, Thailand.

February 2008
Bangkok, Thailand

I stayed in Big John's Hostel all by myself. That's pretty impressive, right? I can go without Amanda and Holly for a few days. It was no big deal.

I loved Bangkok, but it took a while for me to get used to the city. The streets and roads were so confusing, but I finally got it down.

Actually, I began to feel really lonely here in the hostel. Without Amanda and Holly, I didn't have anyone to talk to. There were other backpackers and travelers, but it wasn't the same without them.

After hanging around the hostel lobby and just lounging around, I decided to needed to lighten up. Amanda and Holly were very important to me, but I shouldn't have depended on them so much to have a good time. I needed to depend on myself for once to have a good time. I needed to go out on my own and find my own fun.

I had made new friends at Big John's Hostel and we visited a lot of places together.

We visited Lumpini Park.

We shopped at Little Siam. The place had so many stores that contained jewelry and other souvenirs that I would have loved to bring back home with me.

Before I knew it, I was busy with all sorts of plans with my new friends. Before I thought I had been so alone and had so much free time, but then I had no time left for myself.

On the last day of my stay in Bangkok, one of my friends that I had made there, Frank, decided for us to go to Wat Pho. It was the biggest and oldest temple in all of Bangkok and we had to see it.

Inside of Wat Pho, the temple contained a reclining Buddha statue. It was so beautiful and huge.

Amanda, Holly, and I had already reunited after Amanda hung out with her family and Holly got her scuba diving certification.

We were ready to head off to Bali.

Hanoi, Vietnam

January 2008
Hanoi, Vietnam

Jen, Holly, and I were re-united again as we traveled into Vietnam.

We decided to spend two weeks in Hanoi. It was a lot of time in Hanoi, but there was a lot to see.

Even though the Vietnam War affected most of Vietnam, Hanoi recovered successfully. As we looked around the city, it was filled with new hotels, restaurants, and souvenir stores.

As we shopped on the streets, we didn't go for the expensive stuff. We bought candies, toys, fake brand name accessories, and more.

As we passed by restaurants that made pho (noodle soup), we couldn't help but go into the restaurant and eat their pho. As we were here, I made sure to always eat some pho. Its good smells matched its good tastes.

In Vietnam, there were no street lights, so a person practically risked their life every day if they were driving or walking.

At that time of year, it was freezing. We hadn't brought any thick clothing, so we continued down the street of stores to buy some warmer clothes.

Every time we tried to bargain with the street vendors, they didn't seem to like it so much. Bargaining seemed unwelcomed here, so we stuck to cheap stuff or to the original price of things.

Unfortunately, we didn't love Hanoi as much as we had loved all the other places we had went to. The stealing, the traffic, and the rude street vendors started to get to us. We decided to cut our two week rest in Hanoi short and head off to Bangkok, Thailand.

Viet Pop

One interesting thing that I learned was that Korean music was very popular in Vietnam (and many other Asian countries of course). A Vietnamese person had shown me this video and told me that it was normal for young Vietnamese teen girls (and guys) love this sort of thing.

Foreign Music Loved by the Vietnamese

Laos

It was pretty nice of Jen to let me have it my way for once. I was actually really surprised!

I hope Holly's okay right now.

December 2007
Laos

That morning, Noy had arrived late at the hotel, but it was okay. It wasn't like I had something else to do.

We rode on her motorcycle all the way to Wat Pahakounoy. It was the Buddhist temple that her aunt lived. Her aunt was the nun that opened the spa that Jen and I went to the other day.

As Noy and her aunt talked for a bit, her aunt returned back into the temple to cook rice for the monks.

Noy led me along the dirt path and into the temple and explained how all boys had to go into the life of monk for a year. Then, they had a choice to become a monk forever or not.

As we entered into the garden and Noy's aunt had returned from her duties, Noy's aunt had asked me why I was here. (Noy translated for us back and forth.) I said that I was writing an article on the herbs she used to help relax and cure other illnesses. Noy's aunt explained that after she became a nun, she was taught under a monk who taught her about the herbs.

After she explained how the herbs helped with relaxing at the spa, I donated about $6 to the temple. It was the least I could do since she helped me with my article.

Noy and I returned back to Vientiane on her motorcycle.

The next day, Jen, Carter, and I were on the bus to Vang Vieng.

Carter had talked about river tubing in Vang Vieng, and that was exactly what we were going to do.

The natives of Vang Vieng had built a water park on Nam Song. For only $3, we rented all that we needed to go river tubing.

We put our tubes in the river and drifted along the river. It was so relaxing. I felt like I was in some sort of paradise.

The next day, Carter said that he was bringing me and Jen to Luang Prabang (where Jen and I originally wanted to go).

Jen, Carter, and I wandered the streets. I don't know why, but this city definitely had an air of mystery. Its atmosphere attracted me and I loved it. It was beautiful and mystifying all at the same time.

Vientiane, Laos

After spending some time in Goa, India, Amanda and I decided to go to Vientiane, Laos. We flew from India to Thailand, and then we flew from Thailand to Laos.

December 2007
Vientiane, Laos

Laos was a last minute change to our little trip without Holly. A lot of fellow backpackers said that Laos was a must-see and that we couldn't pass up the chance of missing it.

After flying to Vientiane, Laos and driving in a cab into downtown Vientiane, we decided to eat at Makphet.

As we talked with the young waiters and waitresses that worked there, we learned that they were hired so that they could go to school. The restaurant took in young teens and children and trained them to become good waiters and waitresses. The children then earned to go to school.

After checking into our hotel (which the person who ran it nicely said for us to pay later when we had the correct currency), Amanda had gone out and exchanged our dollars for the currency in Laos which was called kip notes.

Unlike visiting the other places that we had gone to like Kiminini, Kenya and the Shraddha Ashram in India, we were enjoying our earthly pleasures in Vientiane, Laos. Amanda and I just shopped around and ate gluttonously.

When we thought it couldn't have gotten any better, we heard there were massages. We took a tuk-tuk (auto rickshaw) to Wat Sok Pa Luang where the massages awaited us.

After the driver dropped us off, we wandered around and asked a few of the monks to show us where the massages were held.

After wandering for a while, a person came out and screamed out if we were looking for massages. We were and followed that woman in the building.

We relaxed in the outdoor sauna and then received massages. Even though our bones were popping in ways that we would have never known could pop, it felt so relaxing and refreshing. It felt amazing!

We stood outside the building and waited for a tuk-tuk driver to come and take us back into the city. We met a French couple and a fellow American named Carter. We all decided to go to a bar when we returned into the city.

We returned into the city and watched in a little restaurant as the sun went down into the Mekong River.

As we all returned back to downtown Vientiane, Carter had asked us to come with him to a small mountainous town in the north called Vang Vieng.

When we returned back to our hotel, Amanda had told me she had an appointment with the lady who did her massage the next morning in our hotel. She said that the woman (named Noy) would take her to see her aunt who started up the whole spa place. She didn't want to leave me here all by myself, but I told her that I was fine and that I could wander around the city for a while. Amanda wanted to write an article on some of the herbs that the people used at the spa, so I told her to go for it. She wanted to ask Noy's aunt about those herbs.

We all talked it out and decided that Amanda would go with Noy the morning after that night and then we could somehow make it just in time to go to Vang Vieng with Carter the next day.

Goa, India

After our spiritual retreat to the Shraddha Ashram in India, Jen and I, Amanda Pressner, went to a little retreat of our own in Goa, India.

November 2007
Goa, India

I had to go to the bathroom really bad!

The problem was that I was all out of toilet paper. I ran towards the Trivandrum train station and headed towards the bathroom.

An Indian woman was showing Jen how to use this nozzle thing in the bathroom.

Since both Jen and I ran out of toilet paper, I had no choice but to use the nozzle thing. Water came out of the nozzle and it was supposed to clean your butt after you were done with your business.

I had to go so bad that it didn't matter if it was safe or not. I just did it, and to be frank, it felt pretty cool.

After our new experience with the nozzle thing in the bathroom, Jen and I bolted for the train to Goa.

After my experience in the Shraddha Ashram, I decided not to work so much on our trip anymore. I thought maybe I needed to kick back and relax as much as I could before we had to go back to New York. I was actually having more fun than I was when I had to worry about work, and I was happy for that.

Jen and I rode the train to Goa. Goa contained many beautiful beaches that we just had to see. A friend of mine, Sarah, was going to meet us at the place we were staying, Magdalena's Guesthouse.

Goa, India is very famous for its beautiful beaches.

After we arrived at Goa and got a taxi driver, the driver dropped us off at Magdalena's Guesthouse.

We met up with Sarah as she practically jumped on us both and hugged us tightly.

Instead of trying to take a shower in the dirty shower of our room in the guesthouse, we all decided to go for a swim in Vagator Beach to clean off.

The funny thing was that there was a group of cows in the middle of the beach sun-bathing. Maybe that ruined the sight a bit, but it was India. Cows were sacred and nobody would dare try to move them out of the way.

Cows on Vagator Beach

As we all traveled down the beach, there was this little girl who tried to sell this bracelets and necklaces. We asked her for her name and it was Rebecca.

I didn't know what to do. After our experience in Kiminini, Kenya, I don't think I can ever brush off a kid who was trying to sell me something to get money to survive.

Instead of giving her the money directly, we treated her to a meal. She told us her whole story of how she lost her parents and how she was trying to support her brother and sister by selling bracelets and necklaces.

That night, we all went to visit different bars. I was ready to go dancing, but Jen and Sarah didn't want to go. They said they were beat and wanted to go back to the guesthouse and rest. It was understandable, so I went to an underground place with few of the guys that stayed in the same guesthouse as us.

I learned one thing: do not trust foreign people with pills.

I decided to be crazy that night and took this pill that was supposed to make you feel amazing and relaxed. I took it like the crazy person I am. We danced all night long.

The next thing I knew, I woke up alone with no one at all. I looked around and found nobody that I knew.

I must have fallen asleep somehow. It was all coming back to me as I rememebered how I wanted to stay here in this club all by myself!

I panicked as I asked this stranger to go take a cab with me. I couldn't go outside alone! I was a woman, and I was bound to be hurt by some stranger.

As I arrived at the guesthouse, I payed the taxi driver and left the guy who came with me there. I ran back inside the guesthouse and hoped to get some rest.

Shraddha Ashram, India

The trip of my lifetime has started!

It seemed that way.

I, Holly, will be writing this journal entry.

November 2007
Shraddha Ashram, India

I sat down as the meditation started.

The swami that had instructed me and a lot of other people for the past week told us to breathe in and out. He told us to rid our minds of all thoughts and of all worries.

I couldn't do it.

Even though I came here for spirituality, all that I had gained was being even more antsy.

During the silent meditations, my thoughts would always wander to random thoughts. I couldn't even calm myself down!

I had thought that my trip to the Shraddha Ashram would bring me peace and spirituality inside of me, but it was the exact opposite.

My mind was determined to go through this, but my body refused to.

After going through the the first session of meditation and yoga, I finally met up with Amanda and Jen. I had a different schedule than them after all. They just signed up for this thing for a week.

When we went to sit down on bamboo mats for breakfast, we were talking about what we were going to eat when we got out. We couldn't really eat meat. We were strictly on a vegeterian diet. This day was Amanda and Jen's last day, so they were pretty excited to get out of the Shraddha Ashram.

Unlike me, Jen was actually glowing a little. She looked healthier than she had been throughout our whole trip. Not only did her skin glow, but my skin did too. I could have sworn I lost weight too. I guess being in here had good results (excluding the fact that I can't relax).

After breakfast, I had to go do work. The work I had to do was cleaning the bathrooms. I have no idea how cleaning bathrooms is supposed to make a person feel purified or relaxed, but I did it anyway.

After going through my day, I met up with Amanda and Jen again. This was their last day and I wanted to say good-bye to them. It was sad, because we hadn't been apart since we returned to New York. When I was separated from them, it was like losing a part of me. I had to accept their departure, because I was the one who wanted to stay here for a month.

After saying our good-byes, I decided to toughen it up to try to find spirituality.

Southern India/Shraddha Ashram

After our little trip in Northern India, Holly, Amanda, and I went to Southern India.

Jen will be the one telling of the exciting and spiritual journey for now.

November 2007
Southern India/Shraddha Ashram

After hours of traveling by train, we finally arrived at Trivandrum.

We came to Trivandrum to travel to the Shraddha Ashram, one of the many spiritual centers in India. This was practically Holly's dream and Amanda and I knew she was as excited as I was when I first arrived in Kiminini, Kenya.

Holly signed up for about a month to stay in the spiritual center. It was her dream, so of course she was going to go over the top and stay for thirty days! Unlike her, Amanda and I decided to just stay at the spiritual center for a week. Then, Amanda and I would go to Goa, India to relax and have fun by ourselves while Holly stayed at the Shraddha Ashram.

After traveling for an hour in a taxi, we finally arrived at the Shraddha Ashram.

As soon as we reached the entrance, there was nothing but silence. It was a contrast to the bustling place outside of the walls of the Shraddha Ashram.

We entered the building and went to the front desk. After putting our signatures on the many forms we were given, we received our schedules. At first glance, the schedule didn't look so bad (but that was bound to change soon).

It was actually quite refreshing and beneficial the first few days of our spiritual retreat. I enjoyed the yoga and loved the meat-free meals. I was beginning to obtain other-worldly spirituality.

Northern India

After our heart-warming trip to Kiminini, Kenya, Amanda, Jen, and I are finally on the move again. This time, we're heading to India!

I, Holly, want to be the first one to write a journal entry on India. It was my idea to spend time in India after all.

October 2007
Northern India

I couldn't believe what I had just seen. A car in front of us had swerved and hit a man, a woman, and a baby that were all on a motorcycle. The car had swerved to avoid hitting a cow. It couldn't be helped that cows were sacred here in India.

Amanda, Jen, and I were watching the scene unfold as we sat in our taxi cab. We were all protesting how we should have helped them, but the driver told us not to.

We were relieved to see that the man, woman, and baby were unharmed, but the person who was driving the car who hit them wasn't so lucky. Everyone around us dropped everything and started to crowd around the unlucky driver who swerved to avoid the cow.

Our driver, Sunil, had explained to us that the driver would receive punishment from everybody around them for hitting the man, the woman, and the baby. I totally saw that as wrong, but it wasn't my place to say anything. This was India and not the United States. Our driver said that the other driver had a chance to drive away and run off, but it was too late. The driver was going to get punishment.

A few days before that, we had arrived by plane in Delhi, India.

After checking into our hotel, we decided to go around for a walk. Seeing three white women walking by themselves was not normal for India. A bunch of guys had bumped (purposely) into us.

After we had gone to a tourist office and obtained maps, we met Sunil and he took us to the Taj Mahal. You couldn't go to India without seeing the Taj Mahal!

The builder of the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, had built the Taj Mahal in honor of his wife after she died. He loved her best and wanted to do something to honor her existence.

As we arrived at the Taj Mahal, we were met with many homeless children who asked for food and money. There were a lot of children who were trying to sell us things like postcards and souvenirs.

After my encounter with Esther in Kenya, I couldn't help but buy something from this little girl. After I bought something from her, I immediately went back to my group and didn't want to attract any more attention from the many children who were selling souvenirs.

What really confused us the most was why all the natives here in India wanted pictures with us. Sunil then answered that seeing white people in India was rare. If an Indian took a picture with a white person, that Indian would kind of be famous with his/her friends.

After our eventful trip to the Taj Mahal, Sunil had taken us to the Baha'i House of Worship.

We entered into the temple without our shoes. We had made sure to buy floor-length skirts when we were shopping around the streets of Delhi. We wore those skirts with shawls that covered our shoulders. We wanted to respect the culture as much as any other Indian could.

After a long time of meditating to ourselves, Amanda, Jen, Sunil, and I all quietly left the temple.

After that, Sunil had taken us to a street filled with street vendors. After many failed attempts of trying to brush off vendors, we finally got the correct way of brushing them off.

All we needed to say that we had to ask our husbands if we could buy whatever the vendors were selling and the vendors lightly backed off. It was amazing how one sentence could make a vendor back off so easily.

The culture of India was so different. When Indians were nodding their heads, they meant no. When they shook their heads, they meant yes. It was the complete opposite of what we were taught!

Also, girls couldn't sit next to guys. That was considered too intimate for an unmarried woman.

Our first few days in India already proved to be amazing.

The reason why I wanted to come to India wasn't only for sight-seeing though. It was for a spiritual journey.
